Investigators Determine Cause of Fatal Nashua Fire That Killed 1, Injured 7

A fire that killed a woman and injured seven more on Girouard Avenue in Nashua April 13 was caused by carelessly discarded smoking materials, according to the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

Maria Barriga-Consoni, 37, died in the fire, which broke out in an apartment building. The blaze started near a couch on the front porch, the fire marshal said.

Firefighters tried to reach Barriga-Consoni, who was trapped on the second floor, but the flames were too intense, investigators said. Two occupants of the building jumped from the second floor to safety. Five occupants and two firefighters were hurt.

The fire marshal didn’t say who was responsible for the smoking materials.
