New Hackensack Meridian Health & Wellness Center at Freehold Offers Primary & Specialty Care

As the summer winds down, the familiar rhythm of the school year will soon begin &ndash; a great reminder to focus on safety. As emergency medicine physicians at K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital (KHOV CH) at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, we've seen firsthand the types of accidents and injuries that can occur. By working together, we can ensure a safe and healthy return to school for our children.

On the Move: School Bus and Pedestrian Safety - The journey to and from school presents some of the most significant safety challenges. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), while school buses are the most regulated vehicles on the road and students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely on a bus than by car, the most dangerous part of the journey is getting on and off the bus. From 2014 to 2023, there were 209 school-age children who died in school-bus-related crashes, and 79 of them were pedestrians.



For younger bus riders, it&rsquo;s best to be at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. This reduces the need to rush, which can lead to accidents. Teach your children to stay at least 10 feet back from the curb &ndash; about three giant steps &ndash; and to never walk behind the bus. It is within that 10 foot area that kids are in the most danger of not being seen by the driver.

Once on the bus, children should find a seat and remain there. This minimizes distractions for the driver. For drivers, the start of the school year means being extra vigilant. In New Jersey, the law requires drivers to stop at least 25 feet away from a school bus with its red lights flashing. On a road with no physical divider, traffic in both directions must stop. Failure to do so can result in fines, license points, and, most importantly, a tragic accident.

With many children walking to school, pedestrian safety is a major concern. In 2023, 17% of children aged 14 and younger who were killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians, according to the NHTSA. Drivers must slow down in school zones and should be prepared to stop for children at crosswalks even if it&rsquo;s not during school hours.

Beyond the Commute: Backpacks and In-School Injuries - Safety doesn't stop at the school door. Two common issues we see are backpack-related injuries and head injuries. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that a child's backpack should weigh no more than 10% to 20% of their body weight. A heavy backpack can cause back, neck, and shoulder pain. When choosing a backpack, look for one with wide, padded shoulder straps, a padded back, and a waist strap to help distribute the weight evenly. And while your child (especially older kids) may not think it looks cool, always encourage them to use both shoulder straps.



Head injuries are also a significant concern. These injuries can happen on the playground or during sports.&nbsp; According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, contact sports &ndash; including football, basketball, and soccer &ndash; are associated with <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6927a4.htm" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">45% of all emergency department visits</a> for sports- and recreation-related traumatic brain injuries and concussions among children ages 17 and under. While injuries can range from a minor cut on the head to more extreme cases that can cause bleeding on the brain or coma, it's crucial to seek medical attention any time a child has a blow to the head &ndash; and especially if they show signs of confusion, headache, or vomiting. Ensuring proper head and safety gear will help reduce your child&rsquo;s risk of injury.

Back-to-School Safety Reminders from K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital 

Road injuries are a leading cause of preventable death for children in the U.S., but you have the power to prevent them. The single most effective way to protect your child in a vehicle is to use a car seat correctly. When used properly, a car seat can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71%. Unfortunately, about 46 percent of car and booster seats are used incorrectly in a way that could reduce their effectiveness.
"Our emergency and trauma care teams are always ready to save lives, but obviously we would prefer not to have children come in with traumatic injuries," says <a href="https://www.getcare.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/provider/margaret-m-mcguire/2291164" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Margaret McGuire, M.D.</a>, Pediatric Trauma medical director, Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) &amp; K. Hovnanian Children&rsquo;s Hospital. "Taking a few extra minutes to ensure your child is properly secured can make all the difference. It&rsquo;s a simple act with life-saving consequences."
For newborns and infants, the safest place is in a rear-facing car seat, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by the manufacturer. This position provides the best protection for their developing head, neck, and spine in a crash. When you can no longer use a rear-facing seat, your child should transition to a forward-facing seat with a harness and tether, which should be used until they reach the seat's limits. After that, a booster seat is crucial until the vehicle's seat belt fits them properly, typically when they are about 4 feet, 9 inches tall.
"A common mistake we see is the car seat not being installed tightly enough," says Patricia Bonatakis, PT, DPT, Pediatric Trauma Injury Prevention coordinator, JSUMC, and certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. "It shouldn't move more than an inch in any direction at the belt path." Bonatakis also reminds parents to check the harness for snugness using the "pinch test." If you can pinch a horizontal fold of webbing at your child's collarbone, the harness is too loose. The chest clip should always be at armpit level.
Always register your car seat with the manufacturer to be notified of any recalls. Avoid using secondhand seats if you don't know their full history, as they could be expired or have been in a crash. &ldquo;By following these guidelines, you are taking a crucial step in safeguarding your child&rsquo;s future,&rdquo; says Patricia. &ldquo;Also we provide, in partnership with the New Jersey State Police, free monthly car seat safety checks for families the first Tuesday of every month, 3 to 7 p.m., at the Mary V Black Pavilion entrance on JSUMC&rsquo;s campus.&rdquo;

Practice Car Seat Safety to Protect Your Precious Cargo

The <a href="https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/158/1/e2026077414/207901/Prevention-Screening-Diagnosis-and-Treatment-of" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)</a>, the nation's leading group of pediatricians, has issued crucial new guidance to protect children and teens from iron deficiency. These updated recommendations are designed to help parents and doctors prevent severe complications, including learning and concentration issues as well as other developmental delays through improved screening, adjusted treatment protocols and dietary interventions.

Iron deficiency is a widespread problem that can affect a child's brain development and lead to fatigue and anemia. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2003 to 2010, at least 15% of toddlers and 11% of adolescents are iron deficient, and the numbers may be rising.&nbsp;The new guidance on iron deficiency provides the following strategies and recommendations for prevention and treatment from birth through the teenage years:

<ul><li>Prevention that begins at birth with the AAP recommending iron supplements for exclusively breastfed babies by four to six months of age.</li><li>For toddlers and young children, the focus is on a diet rich in iron and limiting the amount of milk they drink, as too much milk can interfere with iron absorption.</li><li>The guidelines highlight the importance of screening for and addressing heavy menstrual bleeding in adolescent girls, a common cause of iron deficiency.</li><li>A once-daily oral iron supplement is effective for most infants, children and teens.</li></ul>

Hovnanian Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, says these updated guidelines are a huge step forward for everyday pediatric care. &ldquo;The 'silent' problem of iron deficiency can impact everything from a toddler's development to a teenager's ability to focus in school. The new recommendations give us a clear, preventative roadmap from birth through adolescence. It's about providing the best, most evidence-based care at every stage of childhood," she said.
"The new AAP guidelines underscore the critical window we have in early life to prevent iron deficiency anemia, a treatable threat to neurodevelopment,&rdquo; said<a href="https://www.getcare.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/provider/lisa-eiland/2444632" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank"> Lisa Eiland, M.D., FAAP</a>, neonatologist and division lead of the NICU at Joseph M. Prevention of iron deficiency in infants starts in the delivery room with delayed umbilical cord clamping for a period of at least 60 seconds.&nbsp; Further, the identification of at risk infants, such as preterm and breastfed infants, allows for timely iron supplementation, laying the foundation for optimal brain and cognitive development.&nbsp; These simple interventions help give every child the best possible start."

Monmouth County Habitat for Humanity is inviting golfers, businesses and community supporters to take part in its&nbsp;15th Annual Golf for Homes outing on&nbsp;Monday, October 5, 2026, at Jumping Brook Country Club in Neptune. Thank you to Presenting Sponsor, Manasquan Bank.
One of Monmouth Habitat’s major annual fundraisers, Golf for Homes brings together local businesses, community partners and supporters for a day on the course while raising critical funds for the organization’s affordable housing and home repair programs throughout Monmouth County.&nbsp;
Golfers and sponsors are currently being sought for the outing, and there are plenty of ways to participate even for those who don’t golf. Supporters can attend the evening dinner and awards celebration, become an event sponsor, or donate an item, experience, gift certificate or service to the event’s silent auction.
“We are looking forward to bringing our community together for another great Golf for Homes,” said Robin Ginburg, Co-Chair of Monmouth County Habitat for Humanity Golf Committee. “It’s always a fun day, but most importantly, the support we receive from our golfers, sponsors and donors directly helps us serve more families, veterans, older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout Monmouth County.”
The day begins with&nbsp;registration at 11:30 a.m. and a BBQ lunch at noon,&nbsp;&nbsp;followed by a&nbsp;1:30 p.m. shotgun start. Golfers will compete in an 18-hole scramble with contests and activities throughout the course, including a Hole-in-One competition, Longest Drive, and Closest to the Pin.
Following golf, participants will gather for an open bar, buffet dinner and awards celebration from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. The evening will also include a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, giveaways, and prizes.

Golf for Homes provides businesses with an opportunity to support affordable housing locally while gaining visibility among golfers, community leaders and fellow Monmouth County businesses.
A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available at different levels, from prominent event sponsorships to individual tee signs. Businesses can also participate by entering a company foursome, donating to the silent auction or providing a product or service for the event.
Silent auction donations are currently being accepted, including restaurant and retail gift cards, entertainment and sporting experiences, hotel stays, golf packages, tickets, merchandise, services and other items that will help make the auction a success.
<h3>Building Homes and Stronger Communities</h3>
Funds raised through Golf for Homes support Monmouth County Habitat for Humanity’s work across all 53 municipalities in the county, including its&nbsp;Affordable Homeownership, LIFT Veterans Build Home Repairs and Aging in Place programs.
Monmouth Habitat's&nbsp;85th affordable home is close to completion. Additional affordable homes are planned in&nbsp;Wall Township, Brielle and Eatontown, creating new opportunities for local families to achieve the stability and security that affordable homeownership provides.
The nonprofit continues to expand its home repair programs. Through LIFT (Local Initiative for Troops) the organization provides home repairs for local veterans while Aging in Place programs help older adults and individuals with disabilities remain safely and independently in their homes through services including Ramps &amp; Rails, and A Brush With Kindness. The non-profit has also recently launched a Handy Andy program serving Monmouth County residents aged 60 plus.
Every golfer, sponsor, dinner guest and auction donor who participates in Golf for Homes helps make this work possible.
Golf for Homes Registration &amp; Lunch: 11:30 a.m –1:30 p.m. Shotgun Start: 1:30 p.m. Dinner &amp; Awards: 6:30–9:00 p.m.
