2 Swimmers Rescued After Kayak Tips In Barnegat Bay: Police

A Ship Bottom police officer rescued a man whose kayak tipped and another who struggled in the water after attempting to save the kayaker.

SHIP BOTTOM, NJ — A Ship Bottom police officer rescued two men who were in distress near the Ship Bottom Boat Ramp Wednesday afternoon, police said.

On Nov. 2 shortly after 3:30 p.m., a man's kayak had tipped in the Barnegat Bay, and he was struggling to stay afloat and return to shore, police said.

Another man had entered the water to help the kayaker return to shore, but both began struggling in the water, police said.

Ship Bottom Officer Rossi got into the water with a lifesaving device and helped the two men return to shore, where they were treated by members of the Beach Haven First Aid Squad, police said.

"Without Officer Rossi's quick thinking, this scary situation could have ended much worse," Ship Bottom police said. "Great job Officer Rossi!"
