Long Beach Twp. Swimming Prohibited Tuesday Due To Rip Currents

Long Beach Township's local summer will have to wait because of 'extremely dangerous rip currents.'

LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP, NJ — The first beach day of local summer experienced a hurdle. Long Beach Township prohibited swimming Tuesday because of "extremely dangerous rip currents," the police department announced.

Long Beach Township PD told swimmers via Nixle to stay out of the ocean at 12:44 p.m. Tuesday. There are no currently lifeguards on duty, police said.

The National Weather Service sent a warning Tuesday morning about hazardous weather on the Jersey Shore. The NWS forecast a moderate risk for dangerous rip currents through Tuesday night.

Dangerous surf and rip currents along with strong winds are also expected Thursday and Friday. The center of Hurricane Dorian is forecast to pass by well offshore Friday, the NWS said. Read more: Hurricane Dorian Update: 'Do Not Focus On The Track Alone' In NJ

Several Long Beach Island beaches prohibited swimming Aug. 25 because of strong rip currents. Beach Haven Beach Patrol Chief Mike Lawrence said waves of 4 to 6 feet were detected. Read more: Beach Haven Swimming Prohibited Sunday Due To Strong Rip Currents
