MANAHAWKIN, N.J. — The wait is over. The Dorland J. Henderson Memorial Bridge, also known as the "causeway" bridge, is open. You'll be able to fully use the bridge Memorial Day weekend.

The project on the bridge that connects Manahawkin and Ship Bottom is "essentially over" said state Department of Transportation spokesman Stephen Schapiro.

Repairs took about six years and cost $319 million, beginning May 3, 2013. The Manahawkin Bay Bridge, which is over 50 years old, developed cracks in the floor beams and some severe rusting. That required a replacement of its superstructure, according to NJDOT.

The main focus of the project was turning the bridge into two. A new bridge was built from scratch with a sleeker design that lets it expand and contract during fluctuating temperatures without letting in saltwater air, according the the Asbury Park Press.

The new bridge will handle eastbound traffic toward Long Beach Island. The renovated bridge will lead you away from the island.
