Cars Stolen, Broken Into This Week

On Dec. 3 at 6:48 am, the owner of a Toyota Corolla parked near 1 May St. reported that the passenger-side door had been scratched. There are no suspects. 

On Dec. 2 at 5:07 pm the owner of a Jeep Wrangler parked near 38 Newark Ave. reported an attempted burglary of the vehicle. The glove box had been opened and a rooftop flap had been unsnapped. No items were reported stolen. 

On the same day at 6:34 pm a male under the age of 18 was heading home when he was accosted near 279 Washington Ave. by another male who demanded his phone. The victim dropped the phone and the suspect, described as a Hispanic male, picked it up and left.  The incident is under investigation.

Later that evening, at 7:10 pm, a Verizon manager reported that an external phone cable located along Branch Brook Drive had been cut halfway through. 

On Dec. 1 at 5:49 pm Ann Buckley, a 47-year-old Newark resident, was arrested for shoplifting at the Pathmark supermarket, 115 Belmont Ave. She had been attempting to steal $42 worth of chewing gum, police said. She was held on bail.

The same day, at 9 am, a male reported being the victim of harassing and threatening phone calls. The victim told police he had been receiving the calls from a friend to whom he loaned money. The friend, a 41-year-old man named Anthony Feacher, allegedly told the victim to "watch your back." Police are investigating.  

There were a number of reported motor vehicle thefts on Nov. 30. That day,  at 6:10 pm, the owner of a 1999 Hyundai Elantra reported the vehicle stolen. The owner told police he parked the car at 753 Mill St. at 12:30 pm, and the car was gone when he returned several hours later.  

At 11:45 pm, the owner of a 2009 Toyota wagon told police that the car had been stolen. The owner parked the car at 3 pm at 96 Columbus Ave. 

At 2:14 pm, a 1992 Olds Cutlass which had been parked at 668 Mill St. was reported stolen. The owner parked the car at 12:30 pm. There are no suspects in any of the Nov. 30 car thefts. 

Also on that day, at 9:15 pm, the owner of a 2005 Pontiac parked near Cedar Hill Avenue and Maier Street told police he saw someone break into the car. The victim said that a radio and a GPS system had been stolen. 

That same day, at the Belmont Avenue Pathmark, Daniel Kavadias, 37, of Newark, was arrested for shoplifting. Police said Kavadias left the store with $152 worth of goods, including meat and seafood, then entered his car. Police stopped the car and took him into custody. Bail was set at $500.
