OBITUARY: David J. Moody, Berkeley Township Police Officer, Dies Suddenly At 36
A memorial gathering is slated for Monday at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals in Bayville.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals have confirmed the death of a Berkeley Township Police Officer David J. Moody, who passed away suddenly on Sunday at his Forked River home.

No further details will be released, said spokesman Al Della Fave. The case has been transferred to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office due to a conflict of interest, Della Fave said on Tuesday.

“On behalf of Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy and the entire staff our thoughts and prayers go to out Berkeley Township Police Department,” a post on the Ocean County Sheriff 911 Facebook page read.
Members of the Berkeley Township Underwater Search and Rescue Squad also posted on their Facebook page.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of our dear friend and squad member Dave Moody,” the post read. Please keep his family in your thoughts.”
Moody was born in Neptune and lived in Jackson before moving to Forked River five years ago, according to his obituary.
He proudly served his country in the National Guard, according to the funeral home.
He received his associates degree from Ocean County College, then went on to get his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Thomas Edison College. He received his masters degree in criminal justice from Capella University and was in the process of finishing his doctorate at Capella University as well, according to the funeral home.
He worked for the New Jersey State Department of Corrections, then the Ocean County Corrections Department. He was an active member of the Berkeley Township Underwater Search and Rescue Squad, a volunteer firefighter for Toms River and Bayville and a paid EMT for Lakewood, Woodbridge and MONOC, his obituary states.
“He was an amazing father who loved his children with all his heart and will be missed by all who knew him,” according to his obituary.
He was predeceased by his grandparents. Fred and Ruth Wittenberg. He is survived by his wife Eleanor (Wilson); two daughters, Sophie Anne and Lorelai Ruth; his parents, Michael and Gay Moody of Manchester; his mother-in-law, Linda Wilson and many other family members, according to the funeral home.
The family will receive friends for a memorial gathering from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m on Monday, April 13, at The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals O’Connell Chapel, 706 Route 9 Bayville.
