BEACHWOOD, NJ — A lack of lifeguards means that beachgoers won't be able to swim at Beachwood Beach this summer.

"For months, the Lifeguard advertisements were posted on the Borough's website, the Police Department website, and other various social media platforms as well as contacting local high schools and other agencies in search of potential Lifeguards," Beachwood's mayor and council posted in an update on their website. "Unfortunately, the Borough has received only 1 application."

The small beach on Clubhouse Road sits on the Toms River, which feeds into the Barnegat Bay.

Without lifeguards, it is unsafe to swim. Many drownings at the Jersey Shore happen because swimmers entered the water at unguarded beaches.

Those who enjoy sitting on the beach to relax or get a tan are still allowed to do so, they just cannot enter the water.

Beachwood officials noted that they cover the cost for the American Red Cross Water Front Certifications and offer a competitive hourly rate.

"Hopefully, the next year will bring more applicants to fulfill the Lifeguard positions," officials said.
