BERKELEY, NJ — Berkeley police identified a man they suspect mugged an 87-year-old woman. Authorities issued a warrant for the arrest of David Steen, 51, of Marlton.

The victim was hitting golf balls at the Miller Air Park fairgrounds Sept. 23. Then the man started a conversation with her, hit her in the head with a golf club and stole her belongings, police said. Read more: Man Mugged 87-Year-Old Woman With Golf Club In Berkeley: Police

Steen was charged with robbery (first-degree), aggravated assault (third-degree), possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose (third-degree) and unlawful weapon possession (fourth-degree), police said.

The randomness of the attack and the remote location created challenges in identifying Steen, police said. Berkeley police followed hundreds of leads, which included suspect interviews, data research, witness interviews, area canvasses, surveillance operations and tip-line calls.

The evidence led police to identify the suspect, who frequents Miller Air Park and brings his small dog, authorities said. Detectives first identified the dog and then Steen's vehicle.

"We are especially appreciative of all the concerned citizens who called the police and provided information," Berkeley police said. "This case could not have been solved without this cooperation which gave us vital information. David Steen if you are reading this PLEASE TURN YOURSELF IN IMMEDIATELY TO YOUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY."
