Don't Stop Here: Brick Police Issue Warning To Drivers On Intersection Gridlock
The warning, both visual and in text, aims to help address one of the most challenging intersections in the township.

BRICK, NJ — When the Brick Township Board of Adjustment was hearing the application to put a Wawa at the corner of Route 70 and North Lake Shore Drive earlier this year, one of the biggest complaints was about the congestion that makes daily transit of the intersection.
Multiple residents from the Lake Riviera neighborhood spoke not only at the zoning board meetings on the project but also to the Township Council, saying it took them sometimes as much as 15 minutes to get out of the neighborhood due to traffic tie-ups at the light, where Duquesne Boulevard and North Lake Shore Drive merge and intersect Route 70.
Though the Wawa ultimately was voted down, the issues at the intersection were not forgotten: On Monday, Brick Township police announced steps that have been taken to try to address the issue.

In a post on Facebook, the police department shared the photo above of the intersection. It shows what looks like a giant lattice painted on the road that spans the mouth of the intersection where North Lake Shore Drive meets Duquesne Boulevard.
Along with the photo was a public service announcement:

"This painted box highlights the area of the intersection in which vehicles are prohibited from stopping in, while waiting for the traffic signal to change," the post reads in part.
"N.J. Motor vehicle law 39:4-67 (Obstructing passage / Clearance of intersection) clearly states that a driver shall not drive their vehicle into an intersection, if the preceding traffic prevents immediate clearance of the intersection. This law, (39:4-67) applies to every intersection and whether or not it is painted."
"The painted intersections represent those in which frequent violation are reported or observed," the post said. "Summonses will be issued for this violation which could cost $56.00 (fine) plus a $33.00 (court administrative fee). For subsequent violations, fines could increase."
The post is meant as a warning to motorists who drive through that intersection, so take heed. Don't stop in the box. Treat other drivers with some courtesy and everyone's lives will be just a little bit better.
