Bridgewater Goalie Named To U.S. FIFA World Cup Roster

Bridgewater local and Rutgers women's soccer junior goalkeeper​ will represent the United Statesat the 2016 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Moving on up! Bridgewater local and Rutgers women’s soccer junior goalkeeper Casey Murphy will be one of the 21 players who will represent the United States at the 2016 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.

Murphy will represent the United States in the tournament., which will be held in Papua New Guinea from Nov. 13 to Dec. 3.

“There is no greater honor than to represent your country,” said Rutgers head coach Mike O’Neill. “The Rutgers players, staff, and family are very proud of Casey and are behind her every step of the way. Forever Rutgers.”

Murphy had been named to the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team roster in August. She took part in the almost three-week training camp.

Murphy is 6-1-1 in international competition with the U.S. U-20 team, earning seven starts in eight matches played.

The Bridgewater native was added to the roster following the 2014 college season, debuting on March 5, 2015 in La Manga, Spain in a shutout against Norway.

In just two years at Rutgers, Murphy has already rewritten many of the goalkeeping records. In 2015, Murphy, an NSCAA Second Team All-American and Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year, played every minute of every match for Rutgers, tallying 80 saves and 19 shutouts while allowing just 10 goals.

RU’s GAA (0.37), shutout total, and shutout percentage (.731) led the NCAA, while the team’s save percentage of .894 was third-best in the nation.

Murphy is Rutgers’ all-time GAA leader (0.49), third in shutouts (29), fifth in save percentage (.861) and eighth in saves (143). Her shutout tally of 19 last season set a new school record and tied the NCAA record for solo shutouts in a season.

The U.S. opens the tournament on Monday, Nov. 14 against France, faces New Zealand on Thursday, Nov. 17 and finishes the group against Ghana onMonday, Nov. 21. The USA will play its first two group games at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium and its third group game at National Football Stadium. Both stadiums are located in Port Moresby, the capital city of Papua New Guinea. All the matches will be broadcast on the FOX family of networks.
