Chatham Shuts Out Morristown-Beard

Sam Thiel led the team with 11 aces.

The solid serving of Sam Thiel and Becky Foot, coupled with strong teamwork, boosted the women's volleyball team to a quick 2-0 victory by game scores of 25-8 and 25-11 over Morristown-Beard on the road Tuesday.

After being eliminated from the Morris County Tournament at the hands of Randolph on Friday, Chatham was looking for a win to get the team back on track.

"It's nice to have a win like this," head coach Kristin Lopez said.

The Cougars (12-2) got off to a quick lead in the first game when captain Sam Thiel served an unprecedented 10 points in a row, including three aces. Thiel had 11 aces and three kills on the day.

Defensively, Chatham held Morristown-Beard to only one earned service point in the first game, winning 25-8.

Thiel started the second set game in the same fashion bringing Chatham to a 4-0 lead with two more aces. Liz Maurer and Sabi Sabharwal tacked on five more service points for the Cougars.

When Becky Foot came to the line for Chatham, the Cougars led 14-8. Foot served eight straight points, which included two kills from Liz Maurer. Maurer finished the day with seven kills. Foot finished the day with three aces and four assists.

With Foot's eight points, the Cougars best the Crimson 25-11 in the second game.

While the Cougars are pleased with the win, the team has its sights set on winning the conference title—a feat it can secure with a win over Parsippany in a home game Thursday at 4 p.m.

"Right now our objective is to win our conference this week," Lopez said.
