MOUNT LAUREL, NJ — John Bishop didn’t hesitate when the chance to be a hero presented itself. Now, thanks to Bishop, a man suspected of committing numerous sexual assaults is in custody, police said on Monday.

Bishop was driving down Route 73 in Mount Laurel on Thursday afternoon, June 6, when he saw a man grab a woman and drag her into the woods off the side ramp of the road, New Jersey State Police said.

Bishop stopped his car on the shoulder and went into the woods to help the woman, police said. As he approached the woods, he saw the two struggling and immediately intervened, police said.
Bishop was able to overpower the man and separate him from the woman, police said. The man was identified as 52-year-old Donald Cramer, of Philadelphia, Pa.

“As troopers, we respond to a variety of calls every day, and there are times when we must place our lives in jeopardy,” state police said. “Citizens are not necessarily held to this standard, but there are also times when good samaritans step in and risk their lives in order to protect others.”

Cramer was charged with kidnapping, criminal attempted sexual assault, aggravated assault, robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, terrorist threats, criminal restraint, and resisting arrest. He was lodged at Burlington County Jail pending a detention hearing.

Detectives believe that Cramer may be the suspect of more sexual assaults. Anyone who may have additional information about any sexual assaults Cramer may have perpetrated is asked to contact Detective I Craig McCoy of the Bordentown Criminal Investigation Office at 609-298-1171. Anonymous tips are welcome.
