The Ammon Foundation Hosts Winter Reception
Senator Sandra B. Cunningham Received The 2018 Social Justice Champion Award at the Ammon Foundation's Winter Reception
The Ammon Foundation, the philanthropic endeavor of Ammon Labs, hosted its Winter Reception on February 10, 2018, at Kean University’s STEM building. The event, which raised money for academic scholarships for individuals in addiction recovery, honored New Jersey State Senator Sandra B. Cunningham (D-31) with the 2018 Social Justice Champion Award and acknowledged scholarship recipient Victor Flores, an individual in recovery and student at Rutgers University. The event drew over 125 attendees and raised over $40,000.
Senator Cunningham, this year’s Social Justice Champion Award recipient, serves as the N.J. State Senate Deputy Majority Leader and Chairwoman of the Senate Higher Education Committee. Throughout her tenure, she has been a vocal advocate of children and working families. She believes that quality education is the passport to achieving social equity and that working families have a right to affordable health care, a fair and safe workplace, and property tax relief. In addition, Senator Cunningham champions providing recently released offenders with a “Second Chance” to become contributing members in our society.
Flores received an Ammon Academic Award in Fall 2017. After a successful semester at Rutgers University, he was awarded a renewal scholarship for the current Spring 2018 semester. Flores has expressed tremendous gratitude for the Ammon Foundation stating: “By awarding me this scholarship, you have lightened my financial burden. That means I can spend more time focused on my studies, participating in extracurricular activities and invest in the maintenance of my recovery. Words cannot describe my gratitude." He is a prime example of how individuals in recovery – when given opportunity and then properly supported – can thrive.

“To the thousands of individuals and families in our state suffering from addiction, the future has often appeared bleak and, until now, hopeless. The Ammon Foundation was created with the goal of helping those suffering from addiction chart a new path away from the seemingly endless cycle of addiction – towards one built upon resiliency, hope and purpose,” said Mariel S. Hufnagel, Executive Director of The Ammon Foundation. “The generous financial support provided by those who attended our Winter Reception enables our organization to continue to remove barriers for those in addiction recovery.”
The Ammon Foundation offers support services such as empowerment workshops (life-skills workshops facilitated by individuals in recovery themselves) and educational scholarships to provide those in recovery with the tools necessary to live a self-directed life and reach their full potential. Industry data demonstrates that those in recovery who pursue higher education have a significantly greater probability of maintaining and sustaining their recovery.
