Orange Mattress Makes Clark New Home

Store customizes mattresses for any shape or size.

Need a mattress to fit a specific place? Mindy Segal can help. Need a mattress that is hypoallergenic? She’s got you covered. Need a mattress in the shape of Illinois? Yup, she can do that, too.

Segal owns Orange Mattress, a completely customizable mattress store where each mattress is hand made to fit the patron’s specifications. Even if it’s not a conventional shape.

Segal said she has done round mattresses with a hole in the middle for a bedpan, 10-foot mattresses – you name it. But her father, who owned the business before her, was commissioned to make a mattress in the shape of Illinois for a fundraiser.

“It just shows you what we can do,” she said.

Orange Mattress is a recent addition to the Target Plaza on Central Avenue after Segal moved the business from Maplewood. She said the location is great because it is right off the Parkway and the surrounding businesses are “terrific.” She said there has been a good amount of foot traffic considering the store has only been open for a short period of time in that location.

The store, which was started by Segals’ grandfather in 1902, was in Charleston, South Carolina when her father moved it to New Jersey. Segal took over the business 11 years ago and moved the showroom to Clark. The factory is still in Maplewood.

“It’s always been a family business and we take pride in that,” she said. “We want to personalize the experience.”

Segal said the store offers the whole package so patrons can pick the material used, the size and shape, and it will be delivered directly to them. Materials used are natural, organic and can be made with horse hair, latex, rubber or any material needed, she said.

They also made electric beds and natural pillows.

The shop offers hand-made mattresses, “like my grandfather did,” and box springs, but also carries name-brand mattresses as well. Her beds start around $1,499 for a queen-size mattress.

The benefit of this is that the shop can provide “really good quality” for any shape or size person that might find it difficult to find a comfortable mattress. There is a minimum 15 year warrantee on each mattress.

“The beds are comfortable and durable because we make the best product we can,” she said.
