Trinity Cranford presents a Meditation on the Passion of Christ with Carols 

Palm Sunday, April 17 at 4 PM

Trinity Episcopal Church will be presenting a Meditation on the Passion of Christ with Carols on Palm Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 4:00 PM. The service will be held in Trinity Episcopal Church which is located at the corner or North and Forest Avenues, Cranford, NJ. Admission is free and everyone is invited to attend. The service will feature the Trinity Episcopal Church Choir, under the direction of Mr. James Lenney, Trinity’s Organist and Choirmaster.  

The church’s choir will present a Meditation on the Passion of Christ, with Carols, as sung at St. John’s College, Cambridge University, England. In this Lenten carol service, the Passion Gospels are sung to ancient, traditional plainsong. The whole of the designated portions from the Gospels of Mark and Matthew are sung as well as the Crucifixion story from the 19th Chapter of John through verse 30, “Then he bowed his head and gave up the spirit.” At this point, after a brief silence, the evangelist reads the remainder of the gospel. Many carols associated with Advent and Christmas contain Passion imagery and take on new meaning when sung in a Lenten service. Particularly effective near the beginning of the service are carols that make a connection between Christ’s incarnation and his passion.

Inclusion of music in Trinity;s worship service involves the coordination of gifts and efforts of the entire congregation with clergy, choirs, cantors, and instrumentalists. It has its origins in a rich tradition of liturgical song as expressed by the psalmist: “Come before his presence with a song” (Psalm 100). “It is from this rich legacy that we, who worship at Trinity Church, raise our voice in song to the glory of God,” said Mr. Lenney.
