WESTFIELD AREA Y FLYERS TRACK CLUB TEAM MEMBERS WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND A SILVER MEDAL AT INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

WESTFIELD AREA Y FLYERS TRACK CLUB TEAM MEMBERS WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND A SILVER MEDAL AT INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Three athletes from the Westfield Area Y Flyers Track Club recently competed in the AAU and USATF Track and Field National Indoor Championships. Benjamin Spergel competed in the AAU National Indoor Youth Championship meet in Ypsilanti, Michigan, held on March 6th and 7th, and was crowned National Champion in the 60 meters hurdles for 12 year old boys. Melissa Endy and Thomas Whitehead competed at the USATF Hershey Youth Indoor Championship, held on March 13-15 in Landover, Maryland. Thomas Whitehead finished 8th in the 3000m run and 22nd in 800m run for 15-16 year old boys. Melissa Endy competed in 3000m race walk and won the silver medal for 15-16 girls.

The Westfield Area Y Flyers have been providing competitive Track and Field opportunities for young athletes for over a decade. In the last five years, the program has expanded from its flagship in Westfield to include a middle school program in Cranford. The Flyers spring season started on March 16th and lasts until May 15th. Practices are held three days a week at Kehler stadium. The Flyers are a USATF certified club that serves over 700 athletes throughout the year.
