EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — A staff member from Hammarskjold Middle School (HMS) tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend, resulting in the quarantine of 26 people. School Superintendent Victor Valeski informed the community in a message on Sunday evening.

“As the result of one of the HMS staff, who had a lab positive COVID test result, 17 students and nine additional staff must quarantine as close contacts,” Valeski said.

The East Brunswick School District moved to remote learning model on Monday after the district began to see a rise in the number of COVID cases and subsequent quarantines, among school-going population.

Although the district pivoted to the remote learning model, services like meal distribution and other scheduled non-instructional school activities will continue.

A COVID-19 positive result will see affected individuals quarantining, but services will not be affected.

“Under these circumstances, when I talk about school closures because of COVID, the closures are to remove nonessential occupants of the building so they may quarantine for 14 days and prevent the potential spread of COVID-19,” Valeski explained.

He said the district is fully prepared to deliver instruction, provide services to students and distribute meals during the quarantine period.

“During any school closure we will continue to operate in a remote format,” he said.
