Come Build a Bat Box at the Tulpehaking Nature Center
HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Join Mercer County Park Commission’s Naturalist staff as they present a Bat Box Building Workshop at the Tulpehaking Nature Center on Saturday, November 14 from 1 to 3 pm.
As farmers and other friends of bats know, the reputation bats have earned is far from the truth. All of New Jersey’s bats are insect eaters and provide immeasurable benefits for our ecosystem. Unfortunately, our bat population is in decline, for many reasons including habitat destruction and White Nose Syndrome.
With this workshop, you and your family can help in the effort to revitalize our local bat population. Mercer County Stewardship Coordinator Emily Rogalsky will lead the workshop, arming you with the materials and information to provide a safe and healthy space for bats to roost in the coming summer months. By providing a place for bats to roost in your backyard, you will be the beneficiary of their nightly feeding sessions. A single bat can consume between 3,000 and 4,500 bugs in a single night with their favorites being mosquitoes, beetles, moths and even stink bugs!
