MCCC Announces Community Events for Black History Month in February

The observance includes discussion groups, a film, and gospel and jazz performances.

Mercer County Community College (MCCC) will celebrate Black History Month in February with a slate of community events at its West Windsor and Trenton campuses. Most events are presented free.

On Wednesday, Feb. 3, the James Kerney Campus (JKC) in Trenton will host a showing of the film “The Great Debaters,” based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a professor at Wiley College (TX) who inspired students to form the school’s first debate team, which went on to challenge Harvard in the national championship in 1935. The film will be shown at 6 p.m. in Kerney Hall.

A community conversation on Thursday, Feb. 18 will focus on the power of positive thinking and ways to put those thoughts into action. The “Change Your Thoughts; Change Your Life” panel discussion will feature faculty members Alvyn Haywood (Communication), Denise Ingram (Sociology), Nicole Homer (English), Dylan Wolfe (Communication), Denise Grey (Information Technology), and WWFM General Manager Peter Fretwell. The discussion takes place from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the West Windsor Campus Communication Building, Room 109.

Next up are two events that celebrate African Americans in the performing arts. On Friday, Feb. 19, the Trenton Campus invites the community to a Jazz Café with the Trenton-based Bob Smith Quartet, which will pay tribute to saxophonist Tommy Gryce. The event is from 6 to 9 p.m. in JKC’s Center City Café. Light refreshments will be served; menu items will also be available for purchase.
