New Jersey Utilities Association Celebrates Careers in Utilities Week

The New Jersey Utilities Association, the statewide trade association for the investor-owned utilities, and its 16 member companies are recognizing the third week in October, the 12 to the 18, as New Jersey Careers in Utilities Week.

In an effort to promote the various career opportunities that exist in the utility industry, NJUA is supporting a Utility Job and Career Fair hosted by Assemblyman Wayne P. DeAngelo on Monday, October 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Conference Center at Mercer, located at Mercer County Community College.

At the event, which is free and open to the public, NJUA member companies including PSE&G, Atlantic City Electric, New Jersey American Water, New Jersey Natural Gas, Elizabethtown Gas, Middlesex Water, United Water, Rockland Electric Company, South Jersey Gas and Jersey Central Power & Light, as well as many non-utility organizations will be on hand to accept resumes, answer questions and provide information about careers and related educational programs in the utility and trade businesses.

“NJUA and our member utility companies recognize the value of a talented and educated workforce,” said Andrew Hendry, President and CEO of NJUA. “As current employees retire, it’s critical that a future generation is trained, educated and in place to maintain this vital industry that serves as the backbone of our state’s economy.

New Jersey Careers in Utilities Week, which coincides with the Center for Energy and Workforce Development’s Careers in Energy Week, was developed to raise awareness of the job opportunities in the utility industry. It also serves as a way to acknowledge the more than 28,000 service-minded men and women employed by the State’s investor-owned public utilities who maintain, operate, and support the critical infrastructure that services New Jersey residents and businesses 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, 365-days-a-year.

“From the billions of dollars in infrastructure to the millions of dollars in taxes contributed to the economy, the services provided by the public utilities keep clean water flowing, the lights on, the phones working and the heat running in homes and businesses across the state – but what keeps the utilities operating are the thousands of hard-working New Jersey residents behind the scenes,” said Vince Maione, chairman of NJUA’s Board of Directors and President of Atlantic City Electric Company.

New Jersey State Senator Fred H. Madden, Jr. and Assemblyman DeAngelo have introduced legislation that will officially designate the third week in October as New Jersey Careers in Utilities Week annually. The resolution has moved through the Senate 32-0 and is currently awaiting action in the Assembly.
