Bergen County Student Eliminated From Scripps National Spelling Bee

Rimas Chacar-Palubinskas misspelled strephosymbolia.

Rimas Chacar-Palubinskas, the only Bergen County participant in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, was eliminated from the competition Thursday.

Chacar-Palubinskas, an eighth-grader from Ho-Ho-Kus, misspelled strephosymbolia, which is a type of dyslexia consisting of confusion between similar but oppositely oriented letters like "b" and "d".

He enjoys problem solving, especially in math and science. He placed third in biotechnology, medical science and engineering at the Bergen Science Challenge last year, his Scripps Spelling Bee profile page states. He hopes his future study of math and science will "put him on the path to solving interesting problems" no matter what field he ends up joining.
