Englewood Police Investigating Armed Carjacking

Black man pointed a gun at a resident and pistol-whipped him, police said.

Detectives are investigating an armed carjacking Thursday night where police from Englewood and Teaneck chased a black man in cars and on foot before he disappeared.

A husband had returned home near Cleveland Street and West Palisade Avenue with his wife. The wife went inside and the husband was unloading their vehicle when a black man allegedly and put a gun to the man’s head demanding the man’s vehicle and wallet, said Detective Capt. Timothy Torell.

The two men struggled and the victim was pistol-whipped, Torell said. The man was taken to the hospital with bruises and abrasions.

Police received a call shortly after 8 p.m. that a carjacking occurred and responded to the area.

Englewood police Officer Jerel Hammond spotted the vehicle, an SUV, just over the Teaneck border at Tryon Avenue and Teaneck Road, Torell said.

Police pursued the SUV and the saw the man jump from it holding a gun. Officers pursued the man on foot through the neighborhood, but lost sight of him, police said.

Police from several agencies set up a perimeter and K-9 units searched the area, but the man was not found, Torell said.

Englewood police and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Unit are processing the vehicle for evidence, Torell said. Authorities have also recovered physical evidence and are looking at video footage from a number of nearby sources, police said.
