(Englewood, New Jersey- September 29, 2016) Ishan Walia (14) of Demarest, New Jersey, a 2016 graduate of The Elisabeth Morrow School (EMS), recently attended a ceremony with his family at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C., celebrating the select students whose work has been chosen for publication by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in the short anthology The Best of Teen Writing 2016 (available now on Amazon). Ishan’s writing was chosen from an initial 320,000 entries to the prestigious contest. These submissions were further winnowed to 784 National Medalists in writing, and 71 works were published in this collection. The ceremony at the Department of Education featured the debut of the exhibit, At.Write.Now.DC, where approximately 65 works of art and several copies of the book will be on display for the next year. Students and their educators were invited as guests to participate in workshops and enjoy the opening celebration.

Aaron Cooper, Head of School, “Ishan is not only a talented writer, but also an active student leader and impressive public speaker. That’s the kind of student that develops at EMS, one who is well-rounded with the ability to explore many different passions simultaneously.”

“Ishan’s work, and the work of so many other EMS students who have won awards in this competition, has been outstanding. This is a testament to our students’ hard work and our school’s emphasis on drafting and revising,” said Laura Khutorsky, who teaches creative writing at The Elisabeth Morrow School. “We are all very proud of him.”

Ishan now attends the prestigious Trinity School in New York City.
