UPDATE: Air Conditioning Unit Or Generator May Have Sparked N.J. Campus Fire: Cops [VIDEO]

A college and a church in New Jersey were evacuated Wednesday as a fire raged at the campus, police said.

An air conditioner or generator may have sparked a raging fire at St. Peter's University in Englewood Cliffs Wednesday, police said.

The fire consumed a building on the campus of St. Michael's Villa and four or five vehicles that were parked nearby, said Capt. Brian Murphy.

The fire was reported at 7:15 a.m. and consumed the building, which is owned by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace.

Nearly 80 nuns were evacuated from the complex, with the help of the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police, and one of the nuns lost a cat to smoke inhalation, according to the report.

The fire was knocked down at 12:30 p.m., police said.

Two police officers were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and a few others were checked out by first responders, Murphy said.

The campus is closed until further notice, the university stated on Twitter.

The Englewood Cliffs campus of Saint Peter's University is located five minutes from the George Washington Bridge and is a campus dedicated to the adult learner, according to its website.

The Englewood Cliffs Campus offers graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity for small classes, personalized advising and financial aid counseling, and convenient, free parking, the site says.
