2 People Shot In Fair Lawn When Gun Accidentally Fires: Police

A man showing off his handgun accidentally shot himself and a friend in a Fair Lawn home Saturday night, police said.

FAIR LAWN, NJ — A borough man and his friend were shot when a handgun the man was showing off accidentally fired off one round, police said.

The 40-year-old gun owner was showing his .380-caliber Beretta semi-automatic handgun at his Rosewood Street home to a 49-year-old acquaintance from Paterson at when one round was fired from the gun, Sgt. Brian Metzler said in a news release early Sunday morning.

The bullet hit the gun owner in the left hand and his friend in the right hip, Metzler said.

A woman and friend of both men took them to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, Metzler said. An off-duty Paterson Police officer working a security detail at the hospital contacted Fair Lawn Police about the gun shot victims, he said.

Police recovered the handgun at the Rosewood Street house. The men were being treated at St. Joseph's early Sunday morning.
