'Flags In'

Fair Lawn Boy Scout Troops 53 and 60 perform "Flags In" Memorial Day tradition at Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery

"Flags In" was begun in 1948 by the Army's 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, The Old Guard. Flags In was started to honor America's fallen heroes and remember them on Memorial Day. The Old Guard will post over 220,000 flags at Arlington National Cemetery this weekend.

The tradition of Flags In will be carried out in small towns and large cities all across America and Fair Lawn is no exception. On Saturday, May 26, the Fair Lawn Veterans Council held its annual Memorial Day Veterans Grave Decoration Ceremony at .

Fair Lawn Boy Scouts from Troops 53 and 60 searched the granite slabs for veterans of years past and placed black-tipped American flags next to the headstones.

The weather was hot and most of the work was done in the midday sun. This was not an easy job, but these troops were up to the task. The scouts were deployed to every corner of the burial grounds and within hours they had completed their project.

The end result of their efforts is  a fitting tribute to the heroes of Fair Lawn who proudly served their country and walked our streets. Visit the cemetery this weekend and pay respect to our Veterans.
