Fair Lawn Gas Station Robbed Sunday Morning: Police

Man took $600 and several packs of cigarettes, authorities said.

FAIR LAWN, N.J. -The BP gas station on Wagaraw Road was robbed early Sunday morning, police said.

Police responded to the gas station shortly before 5 a.m. after an attendant was approached by a black man carrying a gas can, said Sgt. Brian Metzler.

The man claimed his car broke down and when the attend turned to open the gas can, the man allegedly struck the attendant with an "unknown silver object," Metzler said.

The man man then forced the attendant into an office where the man stole approximately $600 and place several packs of cigarettes into a black plastic bag before, the sergeant said. The man then ran across the Lincoln Avenue bridge into Paterson, Metzler said.

Police said the man appeared to be in his 30s and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, a black baseball cap with a red rim, and gloves, Metzler said.

Police searched the area and found someone who possibly fit that description on 5th Avenue, but the person fled onto 16th Street and and ran into backyards, Metzler said.

Police recovered evidence at the scene and will be processed, Metzler said.

The attendant suffered facial injuries, but refused medical treatment, police said.
