Fair Lawn's Cultural Oasis Kicks Off New Season Of Entertainment

Variety of acts coming to the Fair Lawn Community Center

Some Fairlawners may consider themselves fortunate to live only 20 miles from New York City. But they've also got a cultural oasis in their own backyard.

Once again, the Fair Lawn Community Center is offering a diverse selection of music, dance, theater and art to appeal to the community's cosmopolitan population.

There was audible pride in the voice of Robin Schamach, the borough's corporate and cultural planner, when she described the center as "a state-of-the-art facility."

The performance space, Schamach said, has a traditional stage, high-tech lighting, Dolby sound, and seating for 170. Schamach said she is pleased that the center is once again partnering with some of New Jersey's most exciting artists, including the professional troupes Skyline Theatre Company and St. Anne Stages; The Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club; the Fairlawn Russian Club; and popular community group the Old Library Theatre.

Friday and Saturday, the Nikki Manx Dance Project and the EDP Dance Project combine talents to present "The Big Picture," a showcase of dance styles ranging from modern to African to jazz. Oct. 2 and 3 will bring the Skyline Theatre Company in the original musical "Summer Stock" (based on the Gene Kelly-Judy Garland film of the same name). The Old Library Theatre's staging of the musical spoof "Pageant" will be on the weekends of Oct. 15 and 17.
