'Potentially Rabid' Raccoon Spotted Nearby, Authorities Warn

The "overly friendly" raccoon, police said, has not yet been caught.

A "potentially rabid, overly friendly" raccoon may be in the area, police warned Tuesday night.

The animal was spotted near Ferndale Avenue in Glen Rock, a notice by the Glen Rock School District said. It has not been caught yet.

The Bergen County Department of Health Services warned the Glen Rock School District about the animal.

Rabies is a viral disease and fatal if left untreated.

Residents should not approach any animal that they think could be infected with rabies.

A rabid animal could act in a variety of ways, including aggressively, friendly, lazily, or very actively.

Anyone who is bitten or scratched by a rabid, or a potentially rabid, animal should call the Glen Rock Police Department immediately at 201-652-3800 or 911.

A rabid raccoon viciously attacked and injured a 6-year-old Elmwood Park boy as he was walking to school in January. A good Samaritan was near the boy when he was attacked and killed the animal.
