County Waste Drop-Off Events A Success
Record Number Of Hunterdon Residents Utilize County Waste Drop Off Events This Year
Multiple tons, pounds, and gallons of materials have been kept out of the solid waste stream, as thousands of Hunterdon County residents have taken advantage of the County’s recycling drop off and clean up days throughout 2019, Freeholder Sue Soloway reported, at the December 3rd Freeholder meeting.
Soloway, the Freeholder Board’s liaison for the Department of Health, stated, “When we look at the volume and quantities of items recycled, everyone can see how valuable this program is to protecting our environment in the County And it is a cost effective program as well, as it is funded through a $143,000 recycling enhancement act grant from the state DEP.”
Soloway reported that at the three Household Hazardous Waste cleanup days held this year, over 2500 residents dropped off, among other waste products, over 1,100 gallons of used motor oil and 25,000 pounds of paint.

For household hazardous waste disposal, the County’s Division of Solid Waste has
a chemist on site to oversee the material that is dropped off. A private contractor, MXI, based in Somerville, collects the various waste products and transports those products to certified material recovery facilities for disposal or re-use, mostly out of state.

The County’s three Electronics Waste drop off events held this year resulted in residents recycling of 44 tons of televisions, 15 tons of computers, and over 18 tons of printers.
The drop off events take place several times per year at the County’s Route 12 complex. The program will resume in March, 2020.
The County also provides recycling for used tires, smoke detectors, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and propane and helium tanks.
During 2019 the Division collected 270 smoke detectors, 27.78 tons of tires, 300 air conditioners and dehumidifiers, and 395 propane and helium tanks. Residents interested in dropping off these materials should contact the Health Department for an appointment (908) 788-1351.
Soloway noted, “The program is a growing success, as evidenced by the increased participation of residents. The staff deserves much credit for making this program work so well.”
