Man Charged After Striking Mom, 5-Year-Old In Hit-And-Run: Police

FORT LEE, NJ — A man using a cell phone while driving struck a mother and her 5-year-old child crossing Center Avenue and then fled the scene Monday afternoon, police said.
Police responded to Center Avenue and Main Street at about 4:30 p.m. on a report that a pedestrian was struck; police learned that a mother and her 5-year-old were hit by a vehicle, said Detective Capt. Patrick Kissane.
Detectives investigated and learned that the mother and son were hit while walking in a crosswalk on Center Avenue, Kissane said.

Police said Eui H. Shon, of Palisades Park, was driving a 2001 Acura TL east on Main Street when he turned left onto Center Avenue and hit the mother and child, the captain said. Shon then continued on Center Avenue, stopping briefly; he exited the vehicle, but then re-entered it and fled from the area, Kissane said.
Police located Shon and his vehicle at his Palisades Park home, who voluntarily accompanied officers to Fort Lee Police headquarters, Kissane said.

During the investigation, police learned that Shon went to an auto body shop and had the damage to vehicle fixed before police found him at home, the captain said.
Shon was arrested at headquarters; he was charged with assault by auto, two counts of hindering apprehension, reckless driving, careless driving, using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle, failure to report a motor vehicle accident, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with injuries and failure to stop for pedestrians in a a crosswalk, police said.
Shon is due to appear in Bergen County Central Judicial Processing Court July 7.
