Election Day: Fort Lee Voters Cast Ballots for Candidates in New District

Fort Lee voters will go to the polls Tuesday to vote for candidates in District 37 for the first time since re-districting was announced earlier this year. In Tuesday’s primary election, Democratic and Republican voters officially elect their party’s candidates for November’s General Election.

In local elections, the Democratic primary candidates are incumbents Mark Sokolich—for the four-year term of mayor—and Armand Pohan and Michael Sargenti for three-year terms on the borough council. The Republican primary candidates are Judith Fisher for mayor and Martha Cohen and Nadeem Akda for seats on the council.

In the District 37 primary, the candidates for State Senate are Democratic incumbent Loretta Weinberg of Teaneck and Republican Robert S. Lebovics of Englewood. General Assembly candidates in District 37 are Democratic incumbents Gordon M. Johnson and Valerie Vainieri Huttle, both of Englewood, and Republicans Gregory John Aslanian of Englewood Cliffs and Fort Lee’s Keith Jensen.

Voters will also vote for their party’s candidates for County Clerk—the incumbent is Republican Elizabeth Randall, and the Democratic candidate is John S. Hogan—and members of the Board of Chosen Freeholders—the Republican candidates are Joel Brizzi and Anthony W. Rottino, and the Democratic candidates are David Ganz and Fort Lee’s own Joan Voss, the current State Assemblywoman representing District 38.

Fort Lee will be joining the 37th legislative district—and leaving the 38th—after a bipartisan committee announced new districting in early April in light of the 2010 census. 

Fort Lee will officially be represented by elected officials from the 37th district on the second Tuesday in January 2012, when all officials are sworn in.

The newly revised District 37 also includes the following towns:
