Charges Dropped In Atlantic County Police-Involved Shooting: Report

Charges have been dropped against Jalial Whitted of Absecon in the May 25 where he fired a gun before being shot by police, a report said.

ABSECON, NJ — Charges have been dropped a man who fired a gun inside an Absecon dollar store before being shot by police in May, a report said.

Jalial Whitted, 37, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon by certain persons not to have weapons and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, but those charges have been dropped through an administrative dismissal by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

It is not clear why the charges have been dropped, the report said.

However, Whitted still has a bench warrant for violating probation tied to 2018 charges, according to the report.

Whitted is still hospitalized but recovering, the report said.

His mother, Kim Whitted, said he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and may have been dealing with a mental health crisis the day of the shooting, the report said.

The Attorney General's Office legally has to investigate all police-involved shootings.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's office is investigating the shooting to avoid conflict with the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, the report said.

The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability serves as the independent supervisory reviewer, the report said.
