MAYS LANDING, NJ — A corrections officer from Galloway was charged with second-degree official misconduct, authorities announced Friday. Luis A. Mercado smuggled contraband, including drugs and cell phones, into the Atlantic County Justice Facility, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

Mercado, 25, used his position to further a criminal organization, the ACPO said. He was released Oct. 2 after a detention hearing.

Mercado is suspended without pay.
