Man Charged With Bias Crime After Van Fire In Atlantic City
The Pleasantville man poured gasoline on the van and asked the owner if he is Mexican, police said.
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — A man was charged with a bias crime after asking an individual if he is Mexican and then setting his van on fire. Robert Evans also threatened to assault the van owner, authorities said.
The incident took place at 1:35 p.m. Sunday on the westbound side of Route 40 under the Atlantic City High School overpass, police said. The vehicle was parked on the shoulder while the owners were fishing nearby.
The owner saw Evans pouring gasoline on the hood of the van, police said. When confronted, Evans asked the owner if he is Mexican, according to authorities.

After the owner said he is, Evans set the van on fire and threatened to assault him, police said. The van sustained significant damage.
Sgt. Chris Miller quickly located and arrested Evans. He was charged with bias intimidation (first-degree), aggravated arson and criminal mischief.

Evans, 29, of Pleasantville, was jailed at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
