Mom Who Nearly Drowned Saving Kids In Brigantine Makes Full Recovery
After trying to save her kids from a rip current in July, the mom was in critical condition, but has since recovered fully, officials said.
BRIGANTINE, NJ — The mom whose "selfless actions" were applauded after she nearly drowned saving her children from a rip current has made a full recovery, officials said.
The mom, identified by Brigantine police as Kassandra, along with her family, surprised police, Brigantine firefighters and Brigantine Beach Patrol on Aug. 18 with custom wood flags and refreshments as a token of her appreciation, police said.
"It was reiterated to her by public safety personnel that her own selfless actions were directly responsible for saving the lives of her children," Brigantine police said.

On July 13, the 28-year-old mother was in "critical condition" after she nearly drowned trying to save her two young children in Brigantine, police previously said. The children had gotten caught in a current while lifeguards were off duty, police said. Afterwards, police shared that she was expected to recover, and she did. "We were truly happy to see the amazing recovery that Kassandra has made and are very appreciative of her and her family’s generosity!" Brigantine police said.

Police credited Officer Joseph Sweet for being the first on the scene on the day of the near-drowning, working alongside Beach Patrol and Fire Department members to begin basic life support measures.
Sweet, along with Officer Julianna Rote and Dispatcher Elizabeth Huenke, were also commended for taking the children involved into their care for several hours with members of the Fire Department while family members were located, police said.
The three were able to speak with Kassandra and her family and offer their best wishes, police said.
"This is a prime example of all three Public Safety Departments working together and utilizing their training and experience to save lives. I’m proud of the professionalism and skill of the members of our Public Safety Departments here in Brigantine," said Chief Richard Casamento.
"I am proud of our Public Safety Departments and the work they do every day to protect and serve our island," said City Manager James Bennett. "They all deserve to be recognized for what they do. Getting to see this young woman who came back from a terrible life threatening accident is positive proof we have the very best."
Brigantine police thanked Kassandra and her family and wished her the best in the future.
