Excessive Heat Warning Extended Through Sunday For South Jersey

The Heat Index is expected to surpass 100 degrees

An Excessive Heat Warning that went into effect at noon on Thursday has been extended to 7 p.m. on Sunday in South Jersey, according to the National Weather Service.

Heat index values in Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Mercer counties are expected to be between 100 and 105 degrees on Friday. It is expected to be between 107 and 112 on Saturday, and between 103 and 108 on Sunday.

The peak periods for heat will be between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., but possible thunderstorms each day may bring some temporary relief.

Residents with chronic health issues such as lung and heart diseases, people working outside and the elderly are at an increased risk for heat-related problems.

They are advised to stay out of the sun, drink plenty of fluids and stay in air-conditioned rooms.

Residents should check up on elderly neighbors and family members, and are reminded not to leave children and pets alone in cars for any period of time under any circumstances.

Strenuous activity should be rescheduled for the early morning or evening, and anyone suffering from heat stroke should call 911.
