Arrest Made In Gloucester Township Murder: Police

A Gibbsboro man was arrested and charged with murder in the death of Joseph Bottino on Tuesday.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Gibbsboro man who had been charged with murder in the death of a Gloucester Township man has been arrested, authorities announced Tuesday night.

Shawn Massey, 38, was arrested at about 4 p.m. Tuesday in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, according to Acting Camden County Prosecutor Jill S. Mayer and Pine Hill Police Chief Christopher Winters.

A Bensalem police officer was driving when he recognized Massey as being wanted in the death of 54-year-old Joseph Bottino, according to authorities. Massey was arrested without incident.

It was the first time Massey had been seen since Dec. 23. His family reported him missing when police went to speak to him concerning Bottino's death.

Massey, who has diagnosed mental health issues, is now being held in the Bucks County Correctional Facility awaiting extradition to New Jersey, authorities said.

Police said they collected evidence at the scene that linked Massey to Bottino’s death. Massey was formally charged with murder on Saturday, authorities said. Massey's image, courtesy the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, can be found below:

Police were called to the 100 block of Watsontown-New Freedom Road around 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 23 for a report of a deceased man, according to authorities.

Bottino’s body was found with visible traumatic injuries, according to authorities. He was pronounced dead on the scene. An autopsy held the following day determined Bottino died of multiple stab and incise wounds as well as blunt force injuries, and that he had been murdered, according to authorities.

Family members told detectives Bottino was in the area, which is a reservation, to hunt and had previously hunted in that spot many times before, according to the prosecutor's office. Read more here: Death Of Gloucester Township Man Under Investigation: Police

In an online fundraiser, Bottino was described as "an incredibly lovely spirit, with an infectious kindness in his heart, which he led with at all times."

"An enormous heart equates to an enormous loss, which the family is still coming to terms with. Joe loved his family ferociously, and his wife, Jen with incredible tenderness," the organizer of the Joe Bottino Memorial Fund wrote. "Joe was stolen from his family and friends too soon, including his two children, Jillian (Chris) and Joseph (Claire)."

Massey was recently released from prison, after three years for aggravated assault and other criminal offenses, according to the Courier Post.
