Stop and Smell the Roses at Chew's Florist in Blackwood
A staple in the township, Chew's celebrated its 75th year in April.
“If your name is Sam, stop in for a free rose,” reads the sign outside on Black Horse Pike.
Often, says owner Debbie Chew, a big burly guy will walk in and try to convince you that his name is Mary or Sara or whatever name the staff choose for the weekly give away.
“It leads to some good conversation," said Chew.
Chew has worked and managed the florist shop for over 25 years. Flowers are in her blood.
Her grandparents, Norman and Marie Chew, opened the store in 1936, just a couple blocks away from the current location. In the 1960s, Norman and Marie expanded into the store’s current location.
“My staff often jokes that I was born with a floral design knife in my hands, instead of a silver spoon, “ said Chew.
Chew’s favorite flowers: roses.
“I think flowers are beautiful, an amazing act of nature,” said Chew.
The store celebrated its 75th anniversary in April. Chew says the key to the business’ long term success has been two things: fresh, quality flowers and stellar customer service. Chew and her staff wrap individual bouquets to a customers exact specifications—even including glitter and coordinating ribbon.
“I like to make people happy and flowers make people smile,” said Chew.
Chew's Florist offers flowers, plants, fruit and gourmet baskets, balloons and giftware. The business also provides follows for special events such as funerals and weddings.
The store stocks flowers from all over the world—roses from Ecuador and during the spring and summer months, flowers from local South Jersey farms. Flower varieties include sunflowers, lilies, black-eyed Susans and butterfly bush. Local varieties, says Debbie, are a great value.
In addition to the outside sign customers are also drawn in by the large and creative window displays created by the staff. The displays rotate seasonally and are always a team effort.
If you are lucky enough to receive some fresh flowers from Chews, Chew recommends placing them in cool water and changing the water daily. Also, she says, rinse the flower stems to make your bouquet last as long as possible.
