Timber Creek Football Wraps Up Unbeaten Season With Second Straight Championship

The Chargers are the South Jersey Group 4 champions at 12-0.

Gloucester Township, NJ -- For the second year in a row, the Timber Creek Regional High School football team wrapped up its season as a champion.

The second-seeded Chargers defeated No. 1 Lenape, 31-10, on Sunday to win the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 championship at Rowan University, according to nj.com.

Quarterback Devin Leary set a state passing record for yards in a single season in the win. He finished the season with 3,688 yards, surpassing former Chargers quarterback Dan Williams’s single-season record of 3,545 yards. Leary threw 357 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

His three touchdowns bring him to 48, building on the state record he set in the Chargers’ 48-12 win over Winslow on Thanksgiving.

He set the record on a 38-yard touchdown pass to Ezrah Archie early in the third quarter to give the Chargers their first lead of the game at 17-10. Timber Creek’s defense didn’t allow another point after that, and the offense didn’t slow down.

Archie had 152 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Lenape jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but the game turned on an interception by Dante Waugh-Hill. The ensuing Timber Creek drive ended with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Leary to Archie to cut the lead to 10-7.

Tyler Coluccio tied the game with a 34-yard field goal heading into halftime.

After the record-setting score in the third quarter, Leary also threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Dante Waugh-Hill in the same session, and Jean-Paul Roane capped the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth.

Timber Creek’s second consecutive title put the finishing touches on an undefeated season, one in which there was talk that this Timber Creek team could be the best team in the history of the program.

Timber Creek was in the final following wins over Absegami and Shawnee.

Lenape, which finished the season with a record of 11-1, downed Woodrow Wilson and Highland to reach the final.
