Civil Rights Activist to Recall Sit-in and Arrest

Margaret Taylor will describe her experience as a North Carolina college student protesting segregation in the 1960s for the Lawnside Historical Society on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. via Zoom during its regular monthly meeting.

Mrs. Taylor graduated from Shaw University in Raleigh but had to leave the state in order to find work as a teacher. She found it in Chillicothe, Ohio, where she taught for three years before looking for employment. That search lead her to Deptford, N.J. where she taught and lead a department for 32 years before retiring.

She will talk about the being jailed for three days with 30 others in a single cell with one bed, no direct light and limited, inedible food and no water. The experience started her on a path of working for equity and justice.

Before Mrs. Taylor speaks, Shamele Jordon, project manager for the Society, will present research on Green Book locations in Lawnside and Berlin. She is soliciting memories from people who frequented the businesses listed in the book locally. The sites includes Newton's Gas Station, Thelma Thomas Beauty Parlor, Henry Smith's Barber Shop, Acorn Inn, Wilcox's Cafe, The Tippin Inn and others.
