Family Critical of Haddon Township High School's Handling of Bullying Incident

The student was the victim of a racial slur during a play at the school earlier this year.

Haddon Township, NJ -- The family of a Haddon Township High School student who was the victim of a racial slur during the school’s production of “Mary Poppins” is upset with the way the school’s administration has handled the incident, njpen.com reports.

Hannah Fields, who is African American, was playing the part of Ellen. There is a scene in which Mr. Banks opens a letter in front of Ellen, and when the envelope was opened on stage, there was a one-word racial slur written on the piece of paper inside, according to the report.

Fields was able to make it through the rest of the scene, and the student who was responsible showed up with their family at the Fieldses house the following day.

Everything seemed fine at the end of the visit, but the following day, she received a Snapchat from the student her mother describes as “offensive and harassing.” They also say the school has done what it can to keep the incident quiet as opposed to coming up with a satisfactory remedy for the situation.

The student has been penalized, but the family believes the district missed an opportunity to educate and bring the students closer together.
