Region's first community solar energy company launched in NJ

A clean energy company that is making a real difference launches its first community solar project in southern and central New Jersey today.

Starting today, Neighborhood Sun will register residents of Camden, Burlington and Mercer counties who are within the PSE&G utility territory. Neighborhood Sun is a mission-driven business that is a Certified B-Corp, which means it is held to rigorous standards of accountability higher than other business and non-profits.

“Since we couldn’t host a ground-breaking press conference at the solar farm, we created a home-spun video that describes our work in New Jersey and about our commitment to clean energy,” said Founder and CEO Gary Skulnik. Over the next few months, Neighborhood Sun will host virtual events to meet community leaders and their constituents to explain its mission to bring clean energy to everyone, even those without roof access or backyards. Neighborhood Sun offers solar power to residents, while focusing on low- and moderate-income households.

“We’re your friendly clean energy social enterprise with a mission to empower neighborhoods to choose community solar,” says Skulnik, who has championed clean energy since 2000. “Community, or shared solar, allows electricity consumers to purchase solar from a local project, with no need to install any equipment.”

Skulnik once ran Clean Currents, one of the nation’s first exclusively green energy companies, which brought together thousands of people, businesses and organizations to switch to wind and solar power. Anyone with electric services can purchase solar energy from Neighborhood Sun – even those without roof access.

“Neighborhood Sun is the only community solar company that puts its members first above all other partners,” Skulnik explained. “By standing up for our members, we aim to be the most trusted, transparent solar brand in the market. For us, solar is about creating strong communities. We are working to fix energy inequality in underserved areas in Camden, Burlington and Mercer counties.”

The Tri County Solar Farm is located on a closed landfill at 900 Coopertown Road, Delanco, New Jersey. The farm is the one of the inaugural community solar projects in the state as part of the Year 1 of the Community Solar Energy Pilot Program, serving roughly 800 households in Burlington, Camden and Mercer counties with clean, renewable solar power, at guaranteed savings compared to PSEG's standard utility rate.

Neighborhood Sun provides all the benefits of locally produced, affordable clean solar energy without any panels to install or upfront fees. Anybody who pays an electric bill can subscribe to a solar project in their area, helping to build stronger communities, fight climate change and save on their electricity bill.
