Spotlight on Mayor Amos Rogers

Mayor Amos Rogers led Lawnside from 1955 to 1960. Local life for the North Carolina native was punctuated by leadership and service.

The Lawnside Historical Society will present “The Legacy of Lawnside Mayors,” featuring Mr. Rogers on Thursday, March 24, at 7 p.m. via Zoom. The event is free. Register in advance to attend online or by phone at tinyurl.com/LawnsideMayors.

Mr. Rogers and his wife Roxie raised nine children. They will share memories of his philosophy, documents and photographs.

As a Republican, he was a member of the Camden County nominating council. He was a school board member and eventually, board president, then a borough councilman. He also served on the Lawnside board of health.

His daughter Kizuwanda Olusola said, “Daddy was always working.”

Mrs. Olusola said he was the first African American toll collector on the New Jersey Turnpike, posted at Exit 3. As a businessman, Mr. Rogers operated the Community Barbershop for decades.
