West Nile Virus Reported For First Time In Camden County

The person diagnosed with the disease lives in Collingswood, a Camden County spokesperson said.

COLLINGSWOOD, NJ — A Collingswood resident was recently diagnosed with Camden County's first case of the West Nile Virus, a Camden County spokesperson said.

The symptoms of West Nile Virus have been previously established as fever, headache, altered mental status and other neurologic dysfunctions, Camden County said.

Those who apply Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), Para-menthane-diol (PMD) and 2-undecanone to their skin will be best protected from mosquitoes, Camden County also said.

The number of New Jersey residents who contract West Nile Virus annually has traditionally been "small" but has also increased in recent years, said Camden County Commissioner Virginia Betteridge.

"The Camden County Department of Health is continuing to work with the Mosquito Commission to ensure that additional spraying and testing will be conducted in the area," she added.

The first cases of West Nile Virus in New Jersey in 2022 were reported in late August in Bergen, Morris and Ocean counties.
