Hillsborough Girl Scout Honored For Saving Boy From Drowning In Pool

Nicole Sherer was awarded the Girl Scout Medal of Honor and honored by the Township Committee on Tuesday.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Nicole Sherer, a Girl Scout and Hillsborough 8th grader, was honored by the Township Committee for her heroic efforts to save a boy from drowning in a swimming pool.

Mayor John Ciccarelli read a proclamation at the Tuesday night Committee meeting honoring Sherer.

"While vacationing in Costa Rica, Nicole noticed a young boy was drowning in a deep swimming pool. Nicole rescued the boy and removed him from the pool. Upon being removed from the water, the boy coughed up significant amounts of water and was then aided by adults," according to the proclamation.

After her heroic efforts, the Girl Scouts awarded Sherer the Girl Scout Medal of Honor — which is given for saving a life or attempting to save a life without risk to the candidate's own life.

This award is one of the highest honors in Girl Scouting.

Sherer has been a member of the Girl Scouts for six years she also participates in the band and choir in the 8th grade at Hillsborough Middle School.

The Township Committee extended its "congratulations to Nicole Sherer for saving the life of a young boy and for being a shining member in our community."

"Well done," said Ciccarelli.
