Hillsborough YMCA HOP 5K Brings Community Out For Run, Walk And School Spirit

Stephen Rathbun set a course record as the YMCA's annual event raised support for access to local programs and services.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough YMCA hosted its annual Hillsborough HOP 5K Walk & Run on Saturday, bringing runners, walkers, families and supporters together for a morning centered on fitness and community.

The event began at the Hillsborough YMCA, followed a course through local neighborhoods and finished at the Hillsborough Municipal Building.

According to the YMCA, the event supports its broader mission of healthy living and community engagement for people of all ages and abilities.

Proceeds from the 5K, along with sponsor support, help provide financial assistance so community members can access YMCA programs and services.

In the male division, Stephen Rathbun finished first and set a new course record with a time of 15:22.

Maxwell Chan followed in 16:23, and Matthew Skikus placed third in 17:26.

In the female division, Meg Pearson, identified by the YMCA as last year's winner, finished first with a time of 18:36.

Sabrina Gonzaleza followed at 16:46, and Ashely Rathbun was close behind at 16:55.

The event also recognized school participation through the annual Hoppy Award, which goes to the school with the highest number of participants.

This year, the award is returning to Auten Road Intermediate School, which brought 404 participants.

Hillsborough Elementary followed with 44 participants, and Triangle School had 28.

The YMCA also highlighted other participants and supporters.

It gave a shoutout to the Phillipsburg Let Me Run athletes who took part in the race and recognized Melva Murray, who completed the 5K at age 93.

The organization also thanked the Hillsborough Police Department and RWJ Emergency Services for being on-site during the event.

It also recognized support from the Hillsborough Youth Services Commission and Penn Medicine Princeton Health Community Wellness.

"Events like the HOP 5K showcase Hillsborough YMCA's commitment to fostering community bonds, promoting physical activity for individuals of all ages and abilities, and nurturing a lifelong passion for fitness," said Nick Bendixen Branch Executive Director at Hillsborough YMCA. "At the Y, individuals discover opportunities and resources to unlock their potential, uncover their purpose, and connect with a supportive community."
