Scammers Impersonate Hillsborough Police Chief, Seek Personal Information

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough Township Police are warning residents to watch out for phone scammers pretending to be Chief Michael McMahon to get personal information.
On May 5 at around 11 a.m., the Hillsborough Police Department got a phone call from a concerned resident regarding a suspicious phone call they received.
The resident said an unknown man with an Indian accent called him from a phone number representing the Hillsborough Township Police Department’s phone number (908-369-4323).

The suspect told the resident that he was a victim of identity theft and needed his personal information, including his Social Security Number, for verification, said police.
When the resident became suspicious of the phone call, he told the suspect to have the Chief of Police call him. The resident then got a second phone call from a different man with an Indian accent who said he was Chief McMahon and requested the resident verify his personal information, said police

The resident became concerned and immediately called the Hillsborough Township Police Department to report the incident.
"Residents are reminded not to give out their personal information over the phone and to be aware of scammers posing as law enforcement," said police.
If a resident is ever unsure of a call they received or an officer’s identity, you may call the Hillsborough Township Police Department at 908-369-4323 to verify the identity of the officer and report any fraudulent activity.
