HOBOKEN, NJ — The businesses on and near Hoboken's main drag, Washington Street, are evolving.

A bank has closed, and a new bank has opened. A popular grocery store shut its doors, but a pizza "lab" around the corner has finally opened.

And several large retail stores are on the way.

Ma's Gourmet Market/Sobsey's has closed for good. Sobsey's was a popular produce and gourmet food store at 92 Washington St. for many years. Customers were disappointed when it closed in 2016, but glad when Ma's Gourmet took over. However, that store announced it was closing last month. A long note on the door thanks customers for their business.

Rumors say that an uptown restaurant may be opening a location in that spot.

Also, the PNC Bank location at 1125 Maxwell Lane has closed, and the space is being offered for lease.

Garden Street Hemp at 103 Garden St. has been advertising a store closing sale. The website has expired, and the Instagram says it's private. Phone calls went unanswered.

What's Opening

Last week, the new Blue Foundry Bank at 334 Washington St. held its grand opening celebration.

Also, two chain stores have posted signage on lower Washington Street: Madewell (set to open on Sept. 29; story here) and Nike By Hoboken, at the site of the former Gap.

Also, the former Medley restaurant at 521 Washington St. appears to be getting new life:

The long-awaited Brooklyn Dumpling shop at 514 Washington St. is poised to open, with new signage in the window and signs saying it'll be an Automat. A certificate from just this week says it passed its health inspection Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Finally, Hoboken Patch reported last week that the Madison Pizza Lab on Newark Street, near the city's southern border, has opened, offering Jersey Corn pizza and more (information and photos here).
